Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a term used for the transmission technologies of voice communication over IP networks such as internet, or other packet-switched networks. Other terms related with VoIP are IP telephony, Internet telephony, voice over broadband, broadband telephony and broadband phone.

VoIP services operate like traditional telephone services, through which users are capable to make calls and receive calls on the traditional telephone network. With voice-processing cards gateway servers are growing to act as an interface between the internet and the PSTN which allow Internet telephony VoIP users to communicate through traditional telephones over long distances without exceeding "Long Distance" telephone network. VoIP systems provide work for session control protocols to control the set-up and tear-down of calls as well as audio codecs which encode speech allowing transmission over an IP network as digital audio through an audio stream.

VoIp Implementation:
Voice over Internet Protocol has been implemented in different ways using open source protocols and standard.

VoIP implementations include:
1. SIP/RTP (Real-time Transport Protocol)
2. IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem)
3. H.323
4. Skype
5. Window Live Messenger

VoIP Services:
VoIP service has been introduced in 2004 and started mass-market VoIP services over broadband internet access services in which subscribers make and receive calls. Full phone service VoIP phone companies supply inbound and outbound calling with Direct Inbound Dialing.

There are three common methods of connecting to VoIP service providers:
1. Through Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA) which is connected between an IP network and an existing telephone jack to provide service from PSTN providers on all the other telephone jacks in the house.
2. Through VoIP phones that allow VoIP calls without the use of a computer.
3. Through VoIP softphone software that is installed in computer to allow VoIP calling without hardware.

VoIP Benefits:
1. VoIP service can be an advantage for reducing communication and infrastructure costs.
2. VoIP provides the flexibility to the services that can be more difficult to implement using the PSTN.
