The development of the internet has made computer systems more vulnerable to hackers. The internet provides an easy route for hackers to gain access to an information system and possibly escape unnoticed. Indeed, a recent study has shown that with the increase in the use of the internet, the number of hackers has also increased. Hackers will not be able to gain access to the customer’s sensitive information (such as credit card number and PIN). Therefore the risk of hackers been able to make unauthorized transactions (pertaining to the customer’s account) is less. The customer can be sure that his/her contact details are secure. Otherwise a hacker may blackmail, send spam e-mails, prank call a customer using such contact details. Also a hacker may use a person’s information to conduct a background search. This may result in unpleasant consequences, for example if the hacker starts to blackmail the person using this information.

As explained above, Information security training is of dire importance to a company which depends heavily on information technology (IT). In addition to IT security training courses offered by a company to its employees, there are also other academic institutions which offer these security courses to people. Some of these courses may even be conducted online. Enrolling to these courses will allow a person to become an IT security professional. There are two accepted entry level IT security certifications, namely Security+ and GIAC-GSEC. After gaining an entry level certification, one can continue to further study in this field and obtain an advanced level security certification such as the Information Systems Security Architecture Professional or Certified Information Security Manager.
