Affiliate Marketing Misconception - Just Throw Up A Banner

Here's how most of us come to affiliate marketing ... we start a website or a blog, look for a way to bring in a few bucks to support it and stumble across a company with a related product and an affiliate program.

Cool, you think. I'll add a couple of banners to my pages and bank the checks when they come in.

And a week, or a month, two months pass and there's no check.

And you start to wonder if maybe the affiliate product isn't right. Or the placement of the banners isn't right. Or maybe this affiliate marketing stuff is just a pile of baloney.

And so you take the banners down. Or maybe you leave them up, figuring you have nothing to lose, but nothing ever comes of them.

This is why you hear the gurus saying that the vast majority (above 90%) of affiliate marketers never make a penny. But it isn't the method of marketing that doesn't work. It's the approach. See, most people who try this approach aren't really marketers.

Unless your web site receives hundreds of thousands of visitors every month, throwing up a banner on your site isn't going to do it. Most of your visitors are never going to notice it. In fact, if you've ever checked your stats (Awstats in your cpanel), you know that most visitors who come to your site stay there less than thirty seconds.

They arrive. They check to see if what they're looking for is right in front of them and obvious, and if it isn't, they leave.

That fast.

You think your banner caught their eye?

Probably not.

And even if it did, it's very unlikely it was what they were looking for.

This doesn't mean you should remove all your banners. It means that you need to do more than the banners. You need to integrate your affiliate links into your content.

For example ... if you've written an article about the benefits of Vitamin B-12 and you're an affiliate for a company that sells Vitamin B-12, every couple of times that keyword phrase appears in your article, link it to that company using your affiliate link.

This is very simple to do and it's very effective.

Is that all you need to do?

No, but it's a great starting point.
