Affiliate marketing is one of the best ways to get started in the online industry. Affiliate programs are free to join and you can start promoting those products through free methods. One of the most important steps you need to learn though is targeting a profitable market. The majority of people that are just starting out are more interested in locating a product or market that they are interested in instead of locating niche markets that have potential profit.

You can go about locating a niche market in several different ways. You can start by doing a search on Google, Yahoo or MSN. You don't want to concentrate only on main categories because you will soon find that there is a lot of competition for those particular keywords. What you would want to do is look even deeper, dig into the sub categories to see what else that market has to offer. Once you have located a niche of interest, check some related search terms by using a keyword tracking tool like Google's free keyword tool.

Another possibility is to visit some forums or groups that are related to that niche. What types of questions are people asking? Are there any problems others are having regarding this particular niche? Once you have located the niche you are the most interested in pursuing you will want to determine if there are any potential profits to be made.

The best place to start would be with Clickbank. Head on over to their marketplace and see what types of products they have to offer in that particular category. A good thing to know is that the first ten products are the most popular products in that particular category but that doesn't necessarily mean that they guarantee to have the strongest affiliate sales. But, this is a great place to start if you want to locate some products through Clickbank.

The next thing you will want to do is head on over to your local bookstore. Be sure to check out the magazine section to see if the niche you are interested in has its own specialty long running magazine. If so, this just goes to show you that this market has money to spend and there are definitely potential profits to be made within this particular market.

The advertisers that promote their products in these magazines are generating sales from these readers which is why they are able to continue to run long standing ads. Just pick up a magazine and thumb through it to see which advertisers appear month after month. These are profitable products for the advertisers so be sure to choose affiliate products that have profitable markets.

Remember to do your research and chose a profitable market. Once you have chosen the market, be sure to locate an affiliate product you want to promote.
