Airline Travel Is Still Safe!
Each time that a string of plane crashes happen, many people begin to doubt the safety of airlines. They wonder if the bad economy is causing airlines to cut back on maintenance. Are pilots just not trained as much as they used to be? Was it just bad luck? Whatever may have caused these crashes, there is something to remember about flying. You are still more likely to be killed in a car accident than in an airplane crash. Don’t believe it? Well, just look at the statistics. An American has a 1 in 11 million chance of dying in an airplane crash compared to a 1 in 5,000 chance if you drive. While more people die all at once in airplane as opposed to a car crash, it’s still an uncommon occurrence. The reason that you hear more about them on the news is because it is such a rare event. Some years, there are more plane crashes than the previous year; some years, there are a lot less. But, the main reason that most people fear flying after a plane crash is simply control. While you are in control when you drive your car, you are not in control when you fly. The pilot is. You are putting your life in the hands of another, which can be very frightening for most people. Also, you are more aware of the risk of dying in airplane than you are of dying of something much more common like heart disease. There is a 1 in 400 chance that an American will die of heart disease. But, since we can’t see every death associated with that disease, it’s not as fearful as an airplane crash. Dying in an airplane crash also just seems like a worse way to die than something more mundane like a heart attack. Whatever the reason behind all these recent crashes, you shouldn’t be afraid to get on the plane. These crashes are getting a lot of media coverage because they are news. And, one of the components that comprise a news story is that it is a rare event. So, the fact that these crashes are on the news should tell you something. While they are definitely tragic and heart-wrenching events, they are still not common enough to NOT be on the nightly news.
