There was a time when flying was a pleasant experience. Even if you got stuck in the coach or economy section, the attendants were still nice, the food was pleasant and the non-alcoholic drinks were free.
Not anymore. Today's airlines are struggling to stay afloat and they are looking to the consumer to fill the sails. Instead off offering amenities with each ticket, the airlines are looking for new and creative ways to get your money.
Luggage check - in the days of old, you could check two bags (and sometimes three) with out having to pay any extra. Today you are lucky to get one. Most airlines have started charging for the second checked in bag. Even more surprise is the idea that some airlines are considering (and one has already implemented) charging for the first one.
Seating selections - forget about checking the internet to see where you can sit. If you want the choice seats (or if you just want to choose your seat) then you will have to pay extra for the privilege.
Meals - there was a time that you could count on snacks for short flights and a meal for the longer ones (all included in the price of your ticket). Today you will likely pay for your snacks, your drinks and even for your meals.
There have been jokes passed around about airlines charging passengers by the pound or to use the bathroom, but it is unlikely that these fees will ever become a reality. With the price of oil at record highs and continuing to rise, who knows what the future may hold.
You can only be sure of one thing - the airlines are going to try to take more of your money. Many of them are barely staying in the air as it is. As fuel prices continue to soar, the airlines will be desperate for new avenues of fees.
