Akon Mixtapes-the Early Years
Akon grew up in a musical household, so it is not surprising that music was his passion from a very early age. His father was a well-known percussionist in Senegal, and Akon was taught to play many instruments from a very young age. He had diverse cultural experiences as a child since he split his time between Senegal and America. While he was trying to make his way in the music industry, Akon had the good fortune of being introduced to producer Devyne Stephens. At the time, Stephens was helping to shape the careers of such stars as TLC and Usher. He took Akon under his wing and began recording Akon mixtapes to shop around to major labels. Trouble, the first major label album released by Akon, was a huge success. The album included many hit singles, including Lonely and Locked Up. Lonely became a top five hit on the Billboard charts and became a radio favorite around the world, but it was just the beginning of more amazing things to come for Akon. Akon mixtapes helped the artist get the attention he needed from all of the major record labels. If he had not recorded them, he may not have ever had the opportunity to record Trouble and get it out to the public. The record was instrumental in starting off the career of one of the music industry’s most popular artists.
