Alcohol Dependency

Alcohol dependency is all around us. If you know someone who has a glass of wine every night after work then they are dependent on this powerful drug. They would because irritated or stressed if they didn’t have that usual glass or two after work. This is not normal and this is alcohol dependency. Alcohol is a nasty drug which if were invented today would be illegal. Yes that’s right alcohol is a drug and the worst of the lot. Society thinks it’s ok to drink a little every day but if you were to ask a few doctors and nurses they would probably disagree (unless they liked a drink themselves). If this is you, try going without it for a day or two, or why not go with a month? How do you feel? Ask yourself honestly if you feel happy going without your usual drink. Without a drink do you feel sick, suffer with tremors or feel depressed in general? Then you have a problem and its time to wake up to that fact.

Heavy drinking can also mask a number of health problems, such as anxiety, depression and other mental health issues. Liver disease, high blood pressure, stroke, coronary heart disease and heartbeat irregularities are all problems caused by drinking too much. You need to ask yourself what you are escaping from. What is so wrong with your everyday life that you need to block out all feelings with mind altering drugs such as alcohol? There could be some deep seeded issues that need to be resolved before you can even consider stopping your drug use. I am using the words ‘drug use’ because that is what it is. Just because it is a legal drug doesn’t mean it isn’t that. It is a drug and society needs to stop talking of ‘drink and drugs’ because drink is drugs!

You need to admit to yourself that you have a problem. Only then can you go forward and make the steps to become non dependant. Visiting your doctor would be a good step to take. Your GP will be able to explain what will happen to you in the future if you carry on drinking. Research has shown that you will be more likely to succeed if you are supported in some way and your GP can put you in touch with the right organisations. You may need to go through some counselling to try to uncover what started the problem in the first place. There are detox programs available in places all around the country which could be the solution for you. Some are even home based so you don’t have to go away for a period of time. More and more of these detox centers are cropping up which is a natural progression in our drug taking society. You can buy tobacco and alcohol from any high street and in the perfect world there would also be a rehabilitation center on every street too. Maybe one day there will be, but only when society as a whole including our government realise that the problem is so wide scale and something needs to be done.
