All You Need To Know About Agoraphobia Panic Attacks

What are Agoraphobia panic attacks? Agoraphobia is being scared or fearful because he or she cannot escape from a situation that brings about panic and anxiety. People with this kind of fear may feel anxious about several things, such as being embarrassed in front of others by loss of bladder control or choking on food.

These can also occur because of an intense apprehension of having another attack. The person may have irrational fears or phobias about places or situations where a panic attack has occurred. People who encounter these panic induced fears therefore stay away from those certain scenarios. Because of this, their activities become limited. Their work may suffer and relationships can be strained.

Most people with this phobia have a certain safe zone. Agoraphobia panic attacks occur when the person becomes fearful of a certain place or scenario, and as a result, confines himself at a particular location. This location is what they call their “safe zone”. For some people, their homes become their safe zone, but this actually varies.

People become anxious when thinking about being in a place away from their comfort zone. They dread feeling confined in a situation where they presume it would be hard or awkward for them to get out of the scenario. People steer clear of those situations which bring them anxiety or panic. It is the fear of anxiety that leads to the agoraphobia. Even when they restrict themselves within their “safe zone”, most people with agoraphobia keep having panic attacks at least a few times a month.

Some also become anxious when they enter a crowded area like elevators, airplanes or buses, especially when they sense that it will be difficult and embarrassing for them to find a way out. They would rather not engage or go to these places than anticipate the anxiety and loss of control. So, people with agoraphobia panic attacks tend to refrain from putting themselves into such situations.

There are certain people with severe cases who try their best not to leave home, because if they do, they might encounter panic attacks and not be able to control them.

But how do people feel when they encounter Agoraphobia panic attacks? They feel that they are losing their mind or losing control. This is because of their fear, stress or emotional anxiety. Friends or family members may notice the person hesitant to leave their “comfort zone” (most of the time their homes) alone or without a companion. This is why a person with agoraphobia typically leads a life of extreme dependency as well as great discomfort. In cases like these, it is advised that the person seek professional advice.

Agoraphobia panic attacks can be treated by therapy, medications and other natural methods. People are also sometimes referred for a brief course of a prescribed medication, such as an antianxiety medication.
