All About Perth, Wa

Perth is the capital of Western Australia and is located 16 ks from the coast in the banks of the Swan River, so named due to the black swans that swim there. It was the first free settlement to be built in Australia. If you like hot summers ad warm winters you'll like Perth with its mostly Mediterranean climate. While the summer temperatures can reach the mid-forties, a refreshing coastal breeze blows through in the afternoons to cool things down a bit. The delightful winters stay around the 20C mark with some nights dropping to 8C. With the longest hours of sunshine in Australia, the outdoors lifestyle is popular in Perth.

Higher education in Perth is taken care of by five universities - four public and one private. Primary, high schools and TAFE abound and it is compulsory for those of age 17 to attend school or TAFE full-time, if not working.

Culture is an enjoyable part of Perth with many annual events hosted. These vary from the Hopman Cup (tennis) to wine, fashion, film and outdoor festivals. Nature-lovers will be sure not to miss the Kings Park Festival where WA's unique wildflowers are displayed. The Red Bull Air Race is excitement of a different kind as pilots compete in various tests of precision and speed.
