Always Take Care Of Yourself When You Work For A Home Care Agency

If you work at a home care agency it can be a very physically and emotionally demanding job. When you care for elderly or ill patients in their homes you will find that they and their families will rely very heavily on you for support throughout this difficult time. That is way you must always take care of yourself, both mentally and physically.

When you work in a very stressful job for an extended period of time, you run the risk of burnout. There are different ways to overcome this problem, and some people even turn to doctors or counselors to guide them through it.

One important thing you can do on your own to overcome burnout is to step back from the current situation and try to see it differently. The following are some simple ways you can avoid falling into the burnout trap.

Some advice that is often given is that you should never take your work home with you. Whenever possible, you should leave it at the office. It’s a little different in this industry, though, because rather than numbers and papers you are working with actual people. So how can you do this?

In these cases, what you need to remember is to try and break the cycle of twenty-four hour worry and concern. You need to have empathy and compassion to do your job well, but fretting about patients round the clock will leave you emotionally drained. And most of your patients are going to depend on you for emotional stability.

You will also be asked to do a lot of physical chores, from lifting to bathing to exercising your clients. You’ll have to be physically fit, so make sure that you are exercising, eating right, and getting plenty of sleep. This way you’ll be able to maintain a positive attitude and be fit to deal with any crises that may come up.

Working for a home care agency also means you will have to cope with a lot of ups and downs on a personal level. You will have to deal with deaths, sorrowful circumstances, and angry, distraught or confused patients and family members. A good outlook a clear head will be crucial in these trying times.

If it feels like burnout is begging to set in, as a home care agency worker you should always step back and reassess the situation. Examine your current lifestyle and ask yourself: am I taking my work home with me? Am I staying physically and emotionally fit? Do I have the ability to separate myself from a situation when it is necessary?
