An Electric Bike?

As time goes on, the matter of environmental issues is not one that is likely to simply disappear. People are constantly looking for more ways to change the way they travel – some from a point of view of affordability and some out of genuine concern for the environment. Most, essentially, look at it as a combination of these matters and others. Taking your car to work everyday, especially if you are the only person traveling in it, is something that is only going to get more expensive. As fuel costs rise, parking becomes more scarce and requires spending money, and tax breaks are given to those who eschew the four-wheeled vehicle in favor of the two-wheeled, alternative modes of transport become all the more important.

There are many ways to approach this matter. One which presents almost as many problems as the car is the motorbike. Scarcely any more economic when it comes to fuel and no more environmentally friendly, it is unlikely to secure you a tax deduction. It may well be easier to park, but still requires a parking space. One thing in its favor is that a motorbike is generally cheaper to buy than a car – but this is only a benefit on the occasion of its purchase. Many people will in this case favor a scooter or a moped. Both electrically-driven forms of transport, these benefit the environment and your pocket. They are also considered a lot safer than a motorbike.

In this debate, what is the role of the electric bike? Well, it is expected that when the 50 states have all passed their laws regarding electric bikes they could well be an excellent alternative to cars and other bikes. Due to their electrical power they are, for one thing, a lot more energy-efficient than a normal pedal bicycle. This is not to say that you won’t get a workout from riding an electric bike – in fact, you may just find that it encourages you to use your bike more, and you will still need to pedal it to get the benefit, so you get a cardio-vascular workout. What it does put an end to is the eternal struggle with hills, as the electric power will give you enough of a boost to get up a hill with less effort. This is safer and more enjoyable.

The question of whether they are greener than a motorbike or a car is not really a matter for debate – they are. It is said that they are less beneficial for the environment than an ordinary pedal bike, but the fact is that where people own electric bikes they get used more often than pedal bikes – meaning that for a longer journey the owner is more likely to resist the temptation to hop in a car or on a motorbike to save their energy. Consequently, less harm is done to the environment and the cyclist gets the benefit of the exercise. For this reason, expect to see the electric bike more and more on the roads.
