An Idea To Help Reduce The Cost Of Healthcare

Each and every year the cost of healthcare goes up. One of the big reasons for this is the cost associated with medical malpractice. Every time a doctor makes a mistake there are a lot of costs that come up to take care of it. The good news is that a lot of hospitals are taking steps in the right direction to reduce these costs.

One step in the right direction that a lot of hospitals are taking is to engage in the practice of medical staff credentialing. If you’ve never heard of credentialing, it is a process that hospitals use to make sure that a doctor is qualified to do certain procedures. If they can’t show that they are qualified and competent enough, they are not permitted to do that procedure in that hospital.

Sounds like a great system right? But how does it really help to reduce the cost of healthcare? Here are a few ways that it helps:

First of all, by making sure that doctors have the right credentials a hospital can cut back on malpractice suits. This is done by keeping unqualified doctors from doing certain things and skilled doctors from overstepping the bounds of their competency.

Secondly, anytime there is a malpractice suit the hospital has to dedicate time and resources into investigating what went wrong. This is an additional expense that can go down if they can reduce the number of malpractice suits.

These are not the only reasons why credentialing is a great idea, but I think they cover the basics. Even with just these two benefits hospitals could cut down on a lot of costs associated with malpractice.

It is relatively easy for hospitals to start a medical staff credentialing program if they don’t have one already. There are several companies out there that specialize in developing software just for this purpose. By using software to handle the credentialing process a hospital can be very efficient in maintaining an effective program.

While credentialing may not be the only fix to the healthcare system it is definitely a step in the right direction. Costs will continue to go up if nothing is done, so it’s good to see that there are a lot of hospitals that are taking this step.
