One of the most popular casino games in the world, Roulette is a simple game of chance. It’s played by spinning a small ivory ball on a round wheel with 37 slots, numbered from 0 to 36. American roulette differs only in that there is an additional zero slot, numbered 00. The goal of roulette is to correctly predict the slot in which the ball will fall and settle, once the wheel has stopped spinning.
Roulette is a game of French origin and has a table beside the wheel for placing bets. On this table or mat, there are 36 squares in 3 columns matching the slots numbered 1 to 36 with the 0 at the end. Bets placed here are known as inside bets. Beside these numbers are the areas for outside bets. This layout gives a player a variety of betting options, with payouts ranging from winning the same amount as the original stake up to 35 times the stake.
Numbers on the wheel are arranged so that red alternates with black, odd alternates with even, and consecutive numbers of the same colour add up to 37 – as far as possible.
Inside bets
Straight Up - a bet directly on any single number, with odds of 35 to 1 (winning 35 times stake if the ball lands on this number)
Split Bet - a bet split between any two numbers, with odds of 17 to 1
Street Bet - a bet on a row of 3 numbers, with odds of 11 to 1
Corner Bet - a bet on 4 numbers, with odds of 8 to 1
Line Bet - bet on 6 numbers over 2 rows, with odds of 5 to 1
Outside bets
Column Bet - a bet covering 12 numbers (just under a third of the table) with odds of 2 to 1
Dozen Bet - a bet covering a set of 12 numbers low (1-12) mid (13-24) and high (25-36), with odds of 2 to 1
Colour Bet - a bet on either the ball landing on either a red or black slot, with payout matching the original stake, or 1 to 1
Even/Odd Bet - a bet on either and even or odd number, with odds of 1 to 1
Low/High Bet - a bet on half the numbers - either 1-18 or 19-36 - odds of 1 to 1
Although Roulette is a game purely won on chance rather than skill, its simplicity and range of bets make it popular. It also has a glamorous association with places like Monte Carlo and an interesting fact: the most frequently played single number in roulette is 17, because that's the number James Bond played in the movies.
