An Review Of Love The Way You Lie Lyrics

“Love the Way You Lie” lyrics are vintage Eminem, and don’t have quite the aggression you have heard in other Eminem songs like “Kim.” However, it is arguably one of Eminem’s most soulful performances and best innovative concepts. Who should pop up at the beginning of Love the Way You Lie but Rihanna, who introduces the song in the same melancholy way as Dido once brought to “Stan.”

However, it’s immediately apparent that something’s wrong with Rihanna’s heartfelt expressions in these Love the Way You Lie lyrics. She informs the listener that she “Likes the way it hurts,” and “Likes the way [he] lies.” From then on a frenzied Eminem enters the scene and raps the same sentiments from a male point of view. Eminem raps that “I know we said things, Did things, That we didn’t mean, And we fall back, Into the same patterns,” and continues on in a hurried and sorrowful narrative, explaining the love-hate relationship that has transpired between the two.

The style of Eminem’s rap is a throwback to the “Lose Yourself” Eminem who is more concerned with life and happiness than with male aggression, though he can’t resist a few pyro-fantasy images (“I’m a tie her to the bed, And set the house on fire.”) in between his begging and pleading for a second and third and fourth chance. Both Rihanna and Eminem’s verses in the Love the Way You Lie lyrics are the voices of desperation—two lovers that can’t split apart but can’t live together. Eminem’s likening of the situation to “a tornado meets a volcano” well illustrates the dysfunctional dynamic; two forces of nature too explosive to back down, but too selfish to walk away.

Eminem’s vocals are well done, and there is earnest pleading in his voice, though one could criticize that Rihanna by far outshines him. The music video that goes along with the single is impressively done, using a burning house as a symbol of love-hate relationships that have nowhere to go but up in flames.

The song is also an interesting exploration of domestic violence, and all the more amazing considering that both Eminem and Rihanna have recently dealt with and ended such volatile relationships with Kim Mathers and Chris Brown, respectively. While there is no official explanation as to what Love the Way You Lie lyrics mean, it’s easy to see the point as you take a look into Eminem and Rihanna’s regretful, flame-filled eyes.
