An Article Of The Collagen

Collagen is the most abundant protein that is found in the connective tissues of animals and mammals. It is a protein that constitutes over 25 to 35 percent of whole body protein in the body of these animals.

Not only in mammals and other animals, it also has its natural presence in metazoan and sponges. In case of the muscle tissue in mammals it acts as the main component of endomysium. Not only this, collagen contributes about one to two percent of muscle tissue in the body and six percent of strong muscles of the tendons total weight in the human body. In various food industries collagen finds its use as gelatin which is the result of its hydrolysis.

It is a long fibrous structural protein whose function is different from that of globular proteins such as the enzymes. Collagen is found to be the main component of extracellular matrix that backs most of the tissues and provides cell structure externally. This is possible due to presence of collagen fibers that is known for the tough bundles of collagen. It has very big tensile strength that forms the main elements of fascia, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, bone and skin. It is also responsible for the production of soft keratin. Not only these, it also plays an important role in strengthening the blood vessels of the body along with tissue development.

It also has an important role in various cosmetic and burn surgeries in many people. Other forms of collagen have various different roles. An example is the hydrolyzed collagen which plays an important role in weight controlling. As a protein it acts as the main satiating power source in the human body.
