An Interview With Jefferson Mesidor, A Series On Potentially Great Leaders

Canada, is a country the stretches from the Atlantic ocean to the Pacific Ocean. It’s a country where beauty abounds abundantly regardless of what season it’s in. Canada is a land that sparkles in the summer, and glows in the winter.

Just as the landscape of Canada is so diverse from coast to coast, so too are its people. Canada is a country made up of people from many different ethnic backgrounds. Canada’s history, resources, and its diverse population are the key ingredients that help to make it a breeding ground for potentially future great leaders.

Great leaders are those people with a broader vision of the way things should be. Great leaders are those people that can move and inspire groups of people into following their vision. Great leaders are those people that place the greater good before their self interests.

At the young age of 31, Mr. Jefferson Mesidor can be seen as an aspiring young Canadian leader with the potential to be great. Mr. Mesidor stands tall with a message to the Canadian youths and young adults by saying, “everything that we do today and everything that we don’t do today, will shape the Canada and the world of tomorrow”. Mr. Mesidor has been and continues to inspire his generation to become more politically involved in their country’s political affairs.

Question #1: Why do you believe that there is a disconnection between the Canadian youth, young adults and Canadian politics?

Simply because If you asked the majority of Canadian youths (18yrs-22yrs), young adults (23-30yrs, & 30-44yrs) when the next federal election was scheduled for? What's a minority government? Who can possibly be the next Prime Minister? You'd find that less than half of that majority could properly answer those questions.

Question #2: Why do you think that there is such a disinterest in Canadian politics among this group?

Quite frankly, I believe that Canadians are suffering from what I call an identity crises. There has been such a vast amount of cultural changes over the past 25 years that my generation has never really developed an identity or image that is unique to us. Or established a proper sense of pride in being Canadian.

Many of us think that the grass is greener across the border, but actually the grass is just as green on this side of the border. Many of us think that the opportunities are more abundant elsewhere when in fact we have the power to create all the opportunities that we desire to see here.

Question #3: What is your proposed solution to this problem?

I am the co-author of the soon to be released book entitled “Are You Canadian”. The book is being written with the purpose of inspiring my generation of Canadians to action; it’s a call to our collective purpose as a nation.

Additionally, next year myself, and many other volunteers will be launching the 2009 Are You Canadian campaign which will be targeted towards Canadian young adults (30-44yrs) and youths (18-29yrs).

The 2009 “Are You Canadian” campaign is nonpartisan and will be a culmination of several rallies gathering Canadian young adults and youths together to help to establish our identity as a collective, a generation, and also a nation. It will also help us to recognize the changing times in our country, and understand our impact as a nation and in the world today and tomorrow.

Question #4: Is this part of a broader plan for you to run as a canadate for a political office?

No, at this point in time my only interest is to help mobilize my generation of Canadians into action, to make certain that they are aware of the fact that the Canada of tomorrow will be shaped by our actions today.

Question #5: You seem to have a lot of passion for your country, where do you see Canada twenty-five years from now?

The Canada of tomorrow I believe is a nation that would have greatly impacted our future society, a nation that would have helped to eradicate social issues such as worldwide poverty, human trafficking by demonstrating to the world how to live in appreciation with each other.

A nation that was made stronger by the migration of people from other parts of the world. A nation that has become a leader and an example to other countries by demonstrating our ability to share our enormous amounts of wealth, knowledge, and resources with the rest of the world.

I really believe that the times are changing in Canada. However even more importantly the world is changing. I believe that Canadians are a group of people with destiny written all over us, and in the next few decades we as a country will be called upon to a magnitude that we haven’t experienced before in order to help facilitate these changes that the world is now experiencing.
