And Our Next Chocolate Master Is...
The competition was comprised of several chefs producing five distinct styles of chocolate desserts over the length of two days. One of the most exciting chocolates was created in the course of the bon bon round and finished up taking the winning spot for that round. Chef Sylvain shaped his bon bon out of black currant chocolate which gave it a slightly purple-ish color. (Coming Soon: 10 Weirdest Flavors of Chocolate. ) It certainly appeared delicious anyway. In the final round, the chefs had to create a showpiece created totally out of molding chocolate, the theme being the Aztec origin of chocolate. According to the Aztec legend, the cocoa tree was a present from the winged serpent god, Quetzalcoatl. Each piece had to be at least three feet tall and could not exceed a specified width. The craftsmanship and engineering of each piece was pretty remarkable. However, one of them broke, causing it to come under the height requirement incurring a significant penalty. The winning piece was a depiction of an incredibly lifelike chocolate green serpent coiled all around a chocolate cocoa fruit. I think Chef Frederic made my favourite pieces, but he came in second place in general. Chef Sylvain, a Frenchman, earned the distinction of America's Next Chocolate Master. The second place winner, Chef Frederic, was also French. America's Next Chocolate Master isn't American-born, although he’s quite talented. Oh well, possibly next year!
