Anger Management Advice For People Who Stutter
I am Stephen Hill, now aged thirty-three, from the UK. Having a stutter badly affected my life, I became quite shy, very unsociable, and quite a depressed young man. The lack of quality therapy and treatments for stuttering would leave me feeling quite angry. I could not bare the thought of having this horrible speech impediment for the rest of my life. The majority of fluent people were actually extremely patient with me and would give me the time to eventually speak what I was attempting to say. This was nice but I still hated the fact that I was stuttering in front of them. A small minority of people were not as patient, some would put the phone down on me, others could not bare to look at me in the eyes. As I reached my late teens I began to resent this type of, what I saw as un-caring, person. I would lose my temper with them and started to hit out. I was beginning to have a problem with controlling my anger and aggression. I was in danger of losing the plot and a serious incident was the next likely scenario. I am ever grateful to my father for taking me to one side. He sat me down to talk about how I was feeling. I explained about my anger and he asked me to put myself in their shoes. He stated that they probably just felt uncomfortable and that they were unable to understand what I was going through. Instead of using all of energy up with this aggression, I needed to channel it to attempting to find a solution to my stuttering problem. I took on board my fathers advice and am happy to report that I have now been fluent for the last eleven years.
