Antarctica: The Actual Visit

This ninety-one year-old citizen has enjoyed the ability to travel far and wide. She recently visited Antarctica. She saw Antarctica in person, not on television or in a magazine. She?d been to this continent twice before this trip, but this was the first time she?d actually seen Antarctica. She saw Antarctica from the air, and never touched the ground.

Ice covered vistas, cold mountain peaks, crusty glaciers and sparkling fjords gave the tourist a beautiful view of Antarctica during her four hour flight. At one point they even descended to 300 feet above the ground. Fog shrouded one mountain range they flew past. Clear skies and sunny weather gave them perfect viewing opportunities. The flight took place in early March, nearing the end of the Antarctic Summer, so air temperatures were far below freezing. The passengers were able to hear a continent researcher lecture during the flight.

A view of the penguins was one of this lady?s goals. She wasn?t able to see any penguins on the flight. Her daughter, who was sitting at another of the plane?s windows did see a far-distant colony. They took a ship to the Falkland Islands. These are off the coast of Argentina. She traveled by boat to a beach on the East Island of the Falklands. There hundreds of Magellan penguins greeted her. These are the tallest of the penguins.

They flew over 16 hours from the United States to South America, where the cruise began. They were able to see many South American ports, and then were invited to take a dip in the ship?s pool. She jumped right in, not worrying about how very cold it was, and earned a certificate for having done so.

They finally flew into Rio, after having toured Santiago. The cruise ship docked in Chile. Perfect weather accompanied the three week cruise. They could even see the Southern Cross, which is really hard to find because it is the smallest of all the constellations, due to the excellent clarity of the night sky.

In a previous trip to South America, the tourist was able to cruise the continent?s major river system and visit a big city. She returned to the rain forest surrounding that major rivers and witnessed the severe destruction that had befallen it in the few years since her last visit. She worries about the loss of bird habitat. She has even been on Safari in Africa. Having already visited, she only needed to see Antarctica. She finally visited them all with her recent trip to Antarctica.
