Nearly one in five Americans suffers from some form of anxiety disorder. These individuals often range in their symptoms and the severity of their condition. However, the anxiety relief techniques that they employ are remarkably consistent. This article will examine two techniques that anxiety sufferers use to diminish their symptoms.
One thing to bear in mind is that different techniques work for different people. Even those in the mental health profession are aware of the fact that different approaches vary in effectiveness from person to person. That said, the following two techniques will work for a wide variety of people.
The Mind Shift Technique
For many people anxiety is something that they drive. By their thoughts and actions (specifically their thoughts) they can aggravate an attack or make their symptoms worse. However the opposite is also true. By realizing that your thoughts play a large part in your anxiety symptoms, you can also regulate your thoughts to reduce your symptoms.
The first technique that I want to discuss, the mind shift technique, works by allowing the individual to re-frame their environment and their place in it and, as such, to minimize their anxiety symptoms.
The technique works by forcing the individual to accept that their own personal experience is not universal. By that I mean to say that what they are feeling is not something that will be felt and experienced by people outside of their head. That does not imply that their suffering is brought on by self, but rather that outsiders generally are apathetic to their plight.
By thinking about the larger universe around you, you can come to accept the fact of your anxiety as just another thing in life to overcome. The fact of the matter is that most people do not particularly care that you have anxiety. Nobody is crying for you. And by focusing on your own pain you are actually making the pain much worse.
The technique requires you to get outside of your head and accept the fact that just because you are anxious, the world continue to twirl. By recognizing your own insignificance, you gain mastery over anxiety symptoms.
Group Therapy
Another technique that people with anxiety, in particular social anxiety, use to minimize their anxiety symptoms. In group therapy a person can experience the fear of social interaction without having any of the accompanying consequences. In this way they can begin to realize that anxiety can not hurt them and gain invaluable social experience.
By using these two techniques, a person can dramatically minimize their anxiety symptoms. Naturally, this is but a primer into these matters and more research must be done. But, as a first step, it is important to realize that by taking an active role in one's treatment, you can experience a dramatic reduction in your anxiety.
