Anxiety, Stress & Exercise - Why Exercise Will Fail To Bring Relief
Here's something I bet you've heard many times: stressful illnesses can be relieved by taking regular exercise. This isn't quite correct. Because there are several kinds of exercises that merely make these problems worse. Of the exercises that may be beneficial, any relief will be all too brief. Taking brisk exercise for around 20 minutes causes the brain to release endorphins into the system, giving rise to the belief that exercise can be helpful in conquering stress, depression and anxiety. Endorphins function as neurotransmitters and are associated with happy and positive feelings. If you're caught up in an episode of stress, anxiety or depression, you'll be aware that even if you exercise often, the torment doesn't end. Addressing the root cause of stressful illnesses - flawed thought modes - remains the only way to cure them. Your body will reap the rewards of exercise but exercise does nothing to tackle harmful ways of thinking. When my anxiety was at its worst back in 2000, I exercised 4 times a week. For 2 days, I'd perform weight-training exercises. These exercises are the type of exercise that can actually make you feel worse because you have time to think about all of the issues and problems you have in your life at the time. I'd also warm up and warm down on bike machines or cross-trainers. Again, you can perform these exercises easily so you can think about your problems. The other exercise I did regularly was circuit-training sessions. The exercises were performed at quite a high pace with an instructor leading the session and because of the intensity, you just cannot brood over your problems. The problem is that once I stopped exercising, I returned to the modes of thinking which lead to stress, depression or anxiety. Although I was exercising often, it did next to nothing in helping me to address these hurtful ways of thinking. Be alert to what is going on with you when you're exercising. Brooding over issues and problems can easily be done when you perform exercises that don't need too much concentration. Jogging, walking, exercise machines, weight-training are all examples of such exercises. Performing exercises that are intense or with an element of competition make much better alternatives as you'll need to concentrate. I got the most benefit from circuit-training, but soccer and badminton were also good. The idea is to give yourself a period of time where you're not thinking about your problems and worries. And of course, you'll do your body a whole heap of good too! The fact is that exercise will only bring temporary relief and it is vital to realize this. The only way to find permanent relief from your suffering is to understand and address flawed modes of thinking. Additionally, your mind will reap the rewards from addressing the root cause of stressful illnesses just as your body benefits enormously from regular exercise.
