Are Smart Goals Smart?
S- Specific M- Measurable A- Achievable R- Realistic T- Timed Now these are all undoubtedly incredibly important parts of the goal setting process. And it would be harder to reach your goal if you were missing any one of them. But this formula doesn’t mention what are, to me, the two most important aspects of any goal. Emotion Without emotional attachment to the goal you wont stay motivated to do what you have to do to reach it. Some people think that simply wanting a goal means an emotional attachment to it. You can make SMART goals all day long, but if you don't feel a thrill run through you when you first read it, you haven't made a good goal. Whenever you create a goal you must begin with emotion. Don’t just think about what you would like to have, but what you’ve always dreamed of. What gives you excitement? What would make you itching to get started? It could be absolutely anything, but it has to be completely specific to you. You can never share a goal of someone else's as you just wont have the right emotional connection to that goal. Is it more than imagination? Does the very idea of the goal make you feel elated?. Right This one is less obvious, but important nonetheless. Your goal has to be Right for you. It has to be right for you, your family, and everyone in the world. People have a basic tendency towards good and contribution, and you are likely in this category if you have an interest in this type of article. You wont be able to work toward a goal that would harm you or anyone else. You'll never allow yourself. The important aspect here is that this relies only on your view of what's right and wrong. What is right for one person may not be right for you. So before you set a goal, think about actually achieving it, think about the journey. What would it feel like to do the things you would need to do to achieve that goal? If it makes you happy, driven, and elated then it is probably Right for you. If you like the idea, but have a niggling doubt in the back of your mind, or if you have a slight sickened feeling in your stomach don’t ignore it. Now you have to look at what is creating that feeling. Could it be a limiting belief you have, such as “money changes people”, “there's not enough to go around”. Or is it something that would harm others or take away your self-respect. Obviously if it is the latter you must get a new goal, but generally it is the former. This doesn't mean you need a new goal, it just means that you need to address your limiting beliefs before you can move toward that goal. Before you try to move toward this goal make sure you collect evidence and shift the beliefs to focus on how this goal could contribute and be good for the world. If you can’t see this, get a different goal. SMART goals are important, but it's not smart to only use this formula as there is more to successfully reaching your goals. Often people don't understand what they've done wrong, why they just can't reach any goal, no matter how "smart" they make their goal. The answer is usually that they are either not motivated by true emotion, or are self-sabotaging when they don’t feel the goal is right for the world. So instead of SMART goals we should use SMARTER goals.
