Through the past 5 years, there has been a rise in attention focused on breast cancer and breast cancer prevention. Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer for women in the United States, and over 211,000 new diagnoses are made each year. Breast cancer is the 2nd leading cancer for women in the world and the highest cause of cancer death. While white women have the highest risk factors for breast cancer, BlackAfrican women are more likely to die of the disease. There are multiple measures that women can take within their lives to encourage healthy breasts, including personal lifestyle changes and vitamins. It is crucial for women to understand their risk factors for the disease so that they can take steps for prevention.

Among the of the highest risks for the disease is either having already had breast cancer in the past or having a mother or sister that has come down with breast cancer. While these risk factors of breast cancer do not mean that you will be diagnosed, they increase your chance of being diagnosed with the disease in your lifetime. To aid in the prevention of the disease, there are multiple actions that people can take.


Beginning and maintaining a healthy fitness plan is crucial to reducing a woman’s breast cancer risk factors. People have all been told that exercise is important, however so many of us fail to implement fitness plans into our daily schedules. Start small and build your length of exercise plans and intensity to improve the level of your overall fitness. If you are overweight, you are at an increased to develop the disease. A healthy lifestyle and a healthy weight are two of the best breast cancer risk factor reduction strategies available. Be sure to manage an optimal weight by adding fruits, vegetables and calcium into your daily diet. Choose vegetables which are full of in vitamins and antioxidants to reduce your breast cancer risks.

Smoking is among one of the highest breast cancer risk factors. If you smoke, quitting smoking can significantly reduce your risks for all cancers, especially breast cancer.

Ensure that you perform regular monthly breast exams to detect irregularities in between your regular doctor’s visits. While you are administering a breast self exam, search for any dimples, discolorations or small lumps in either of your breasts or under your armpits. You are placing yourself at risk for breast cancer if you are not performing these monthly exams.
