It's really quite easy and all of these fundamentals should be in your goals. The SMART Method is to make your goals:
- Specific
- Measurable
- Attainable
- Relevant
- Timely
I'll give a quick example I think we can all associate with, which is weight loss. Rather than saying, "I need to lose some weight..." instead say, "I am going to lose 10 lbs. by X Date." If you take a look at that objective, it meets all of the above necessities.
- It's specific = lose 10 lbs.
- It's measurable = in this case the same...10 lbs.
- It's attainable = you're not losing 10 lbs. in the next week...it's an attainable time frame.
- It's relevant = it is a goal that's TRULY IMPORTANT TO ME
- It's timely = by X Date - a deadline
This is the target we should focus on, and by being SMART about it, the objective gives us something we can converge on and successfully accomplish. I challenge you to take a look at your goals and be sure they take account of all of these elements. Then, make sure you write them down and review them - regularly - so they're fresh in your thoughts every single day.
