Are Your Web Pages Easy To Read? If Not, You're Losing Prospects
So how do you make sure your Web site is easy to read? First, you want to write using short paragraphs. This includes any articles and content you write. A common mistake is writing in long paragraphs. When your Web site visitor sees big chunks of text, it looks like a lot of work to read. And he or she might not spend the time to read it. For myself, I find that whenever I browse articles online, many articles have big chunks of text. Since there are so many articles to choose to read from, I only spend a few seconds on each article to see if it's worth reading. When I see big chunks of text, it's hard to skim. So it's hard for me to decide whether it's worth the time to read the article. Since there are so many articles to choose to read from, I find that I don't take the time to skim if it can't be easily skimmed. I simply move on to the next article. Most people probably do that too, perhaps even yourself. So you want to make sure your Web site content appears easy to read. You can do that by writing in short paragraphs. Another tip is to write in short sentences. When sentences are short, the ideas are more easily grasped. When you have a long sentence, it's harder to understand. Our short-term memories can only hold 7 plus or minus 2 items. By the time the reader gets to the end of the sentence, he would have forgotten what he read in the beginning of the sentence. And he'll have to read the sentence all over again. You'll also want to use simple words. For instance, instead of using the words “a significant amount,” use “a lot” instead. When you write in simple language, it's easier to understand the material. Another tip is to include subheads. When you include subheads, your content is easier to skim. Most of your visitors are skimmers. If your visitors find it hard to skim your content, they won't bother skimming it, much less read it. Including subheads will appeal to skimmers. If your subheads catch their attention, they'll take the time to read your content. So make sure your Web site is easy to read. When your site is easy to read, more people will take the time to read your site. And more people will buy your products or services.
