Although accredited inand authorized to award a degree in fine arts only sincethe 1980s, the then Montserrat School of Visual Arts offered a diploma in many of the same studio concentrations that it offers today: Graphic Design Illustration Interdisciplinary Arts Painting/Drawing Photography/Videography Printmaking Sculpture Inspired by the past and guided by the future, Montserrat has recently added Animation/Interactive Media and Book Arts to its portfolio of concentrations. Montserrat is a private residential college of art and design. It is a member of and accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (nasad.arts-accredit.org), and its faculty comprises accomplished artists, designers and scholars. The areas of study available at this Art College (Massachusetts) include: Foundation Art Courses Students can also begin study of a specific discipline in their first or second semester. Art Education One of the most challenging programs of its kind in New England. Initial licensure at either the pre-kindergarten to grade 8 or grades 5 to 12 level. Courses comply with and exceed the Massachusetts Standards for Teacher Licensure and the Massachusetts Arts Curriculum Frameworks. Liberal Arts A unique curriculum. Helps both the teachers and the taught to discover new ways through which liberal and visual arts dovetail for the artist's benefit. Senior Seminars A distinguishing feature of the Montserrat Bachelor of Fine Arts program. Required in all concentrations. Senior Fine Arts (a six-credit course), Graphic Design, and Senior Illustration Seminars. Minors Art History and Creative Writing. A minor in Art History is ideal for those who wish to become art educators, curators, critics and administrators, and as a precursor to graduate programs in art history and education, design and studio art. A recent addition, a minor in Creative Writing is ideal for those inclined towards publishing, screenwriting and graphic novels. This minor arms students with critical real-world editing skills. Montserrat also offers the following external study options: Internships and Apprenticeships Designed for both professional artists and employer-sponsored interns. Mobility Study Students can complete one semester at another member institution of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (aicad.org). The Northeast Consortium of Colleges and Universities in Massachusetts Students can use college library facilities of any NECCUM member institution. In addition, those who have completed their first semester and have at least a 2.0 GPA can take up to two courses each semester at any NECCUM member institution without paying any additional tuition charge. Study-Abroad Programs Programs offered by other institutions are open only for those Montserrat junior- and senior-year students who have at least a 2.7 GPA. Montserrat's own Programs have taken students to Italy, Japan, Mali and Puerto Rico.
