Article Marketing - What Is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing comes under the overall heading of internet marketing. Internet marketing is basically any marketing that is done on the internet to sell a product or service.

Affiliate marketing is a bit more specific in that it is directly related to marketing and selling products or services from other individuals or companies. For example, an electronics store may sell TVs. In order to increase their sales and make more money, they allow you to sell their TVs for a commission. You find the prospective customers and send them to the electronics store website. If a sale is made, you make the commission.

How much can I make?
Depending on the product that you are promoting, you can make anywhere from 4% all the way up to 75% on each item you sell. Companies like Amazon and Walmart have a great affiliate program, although the commission is small. Don’t let this deter you though. Remember that 5% of a $750 sale, like a TV, is about $37 and 75% of a $50 sale is about the same.

How do I get paid?
Although each company is different, most have a payout structure set up to pay you every week, bi-weekly or monthly. The company keeps track of every sale you make and will pay you accordingly. At the end of the year, they will usually issue you a 1099 or a statement that summarizes your income for the year.

Does it cost anything to be an affiliate?
No. You should not have to pay anything to sign up with an affiliate program.

How do you sign up?
Signing up with a companies affiliate program is extremely simple. Companies make it very easy to sign up because they want to have you selling their product. It usually just involves filling out a form with your basic information on it. You are then issued a special affiliate “ID”.

What is an affiliate “ID” or affiliate link?
When you sign up with an affiliate program, you will be issued a special affiliate link (sometimes called a hoplink). When you include this link in your email campaign, website, article or pay-per-click campaign and someone clicks on it, it tells the company that you are the one that referred this person and therefore, to apply any sales commissions to your account.

How do I know which companies have affiliate programs?
Amazingly enough, most stores online have an affiliate program. They either have their own program you can sign up for or they use an independent company to handle their affiliate sales. For example, Amazon.com has its own affiliate program. Normally, most companies will have a link at the bottom of the page that will tell you what to do to sign up to their affiliate program. If the company is using an independent third party, they will tell you what the company is and direct you to their website. Popular third parties include Clickbank, for digital products such as ebooks, and LinkShare and Commission Junction for actual products.

Where is the best place to start?
Most experienced affiliate marketers will tell you to start with Clickbank products. They are very reputable, they have hundreds of thousands of e-products to sell and they have an excellent track record for payouts. Commissions for digital products usually range from 50% to 75%.

Being an affiliate is a great way to start earning money online. You can start without spending any money and your earning potential depends completely on how much effort you put into the business.
