Americans love to play, and sports are the widely used way of entertainment. Different sports had made its place in the American soil, due to which they have gained high popularity. After their working schedules people set off at the river side or in some field to play and get entertained. Sports in America are finely choose and are played by the Americans; they enjoy those sports which were invented in America.

A sport like soccer which is really appreciated by the world is not popular in United States. Similarly with cricket, which as great number of fan following but lacks its place in America. The four most popular team sports are ice hockey, American football, basketball and baseball which are enjoyed by massive media exposure and a great fan following. The major leagues of each of these sports are partially attributed to their strong financial power and huge domestic market.

In addition to the difference of popular sports, sports are also organized differently in the United States. Moreover, all major sport leagues use the same type of schedule with a playoff tournament after the regular season. Unlike other countries sports competitions play an important role in schools, colleges and universities inspiring the new generation to improve and achieve their goal in their respective sport.

One of the oldest American team sports is Baseball dating back to 1869. Baseball was ruling America and people’s mind till it found its rivals by 1960. This became a declining era and baseball almost lost its pride and professionalism. Though baseball is called as “National Pastime” it is not referred as national sport.

However the most popular sport of America is American football also known as Gridiron attracting more television viewers than baseball. The National Football League (NFL) is the preeminent professional league marking with expansion of American Football League. Millions of Americans watch college football throughout the autumn months encouraging their children to participate in the sport.

Another major professional sport in United States is Basketball. Invented in 1891, basketball is the second most popular sport ranked third after NFL and MLB. United States Basketball team as won a gold medal in the Summer Olympics that was held in 1992. Since then they have won several major and important tournaments. Basketball is also widely played in schools and colleges level and students like to participate in the sport. A latest version of basketball is Netball which is invented in United States and is usually played by woman.

There are other important sports that are loved by the Americans, they are Boxing, Martial Arts, Tracks and Field, Rugby, swimming, gymnastic. It is not only a pastime but also the Americans make a lavishing career and tries to make it a means of earning their daily bread.

Hollywood also profits by making magnificent sport related movies, which are highly appreciated by the people of United States. Movies made on Boxing really become a box office collection and earns the highly acclaimed Academy or the Oscar Awards.
