Asthma And Physical Fitness

There is a common notion that asthma and physical exercises can never get along with each other. Fitness activities such as gym workouts and even outdoor jogging is said to be completely forbidden for those who are suffering from asthma as these may trigger an attack. This is indeed a problem for asthmatics since keeping away from such measures to avoid an attack only resulted to being physically unfit also. Many asthmatics tend to have problems with uncontrollable weight-gain for being physically inactive. As an unavoidable result for this, the chances of asthma attacks have instead risen.

When someone has asthma, his airways are constricted and this results in problems with his breathing. Symptoms of an asthma attack would include a wheezing sound in his breathing, especially when exhaling. It may also involve coughing, fatigue, and over-all emotional and physical discomfort. The trauma of an asthma attack is enough to dissuade him from physically demanding activities.

Consciously or not, many people have avoided work or leisurely activities that may cause asthma. Doctors, on the other hand, have pointed out that physical exertion is indeed one of the reasons that could trigger an asthma attack along with environmental factors such as air pollution. With less physical activities, many people with asthma have lost control also of their weight. Asthmatic kids spend more time watching TV or playing with computers instead of outdoor games. The net result is that more and more children with asthma are also suffering obesity.

On the other hand, researches have also proven that asthma can also be triggered by the lack of physical activities. Without enough exercise, a short run and walk or even just some minutes of light aerobic routines can already make an asthmatic run out of breath easily. Worse, having lungs that are not privileged with exercises can make one susceptible to allergens, air pollution and other asthma causing factors. Hence, people with asthma are required to exercise also. Their case should instead encourage them to exercise.

Physical fitness activities are important in order to build defenses against asthma. Asthma is still incurable and the only known solution, so far, is to prevent any factor that could set it off. One good way of putting up a good defense system is to have a fit body that could make one endure light to medium physical activities. The physical exercises required may, however, be not as tedious as those of not suffering from asthma may. The routines may be lighter with simpler reps to boot.

Outdoor fitness activities may not be allowed for the asthmatic, especially under cold weather. While the jogging may be short and easy, the cold weather may just cause an asthma attack. An asthmatic should also maintain a balanced and non-fat diet. With less physical activities afforded to him, he should keep away from food that may only aid increasing his weight to unhealthy proportions.
