Astonishing Products Used For Cosmetic Production

We all know that make up and cosmetics have been around for centuries. We also know that back in the day the cosmetics used were not only dangerous but sometimes even lethal. A good example is the ancient Egyptian women who used to apply a substance known as Kohl to their eyes to produce a darkening effect. This substance eventually led to the death of many of these women. There is also the example where some African women used lead carbonate to bleach their skin- a gesture which they interpreted to be beautiful. Unknown to them, they were actually exposing themselves to skin cancers and skin complications.

This just proves that when it comes to beauty, people will go to great lengths to just to look good. While it is good that toxic cosmetics are on the decline in the world today, technology and human creativity have managed to come up with products, though safe, are not composed of the prettiest ingredients. Let’s have a look at some of these ingredients.

The first ingredient is not so much an ingredient but a waste product. I’m talking about waste cooking oil. Yes! Most people don’t actually think such a product can be used in the manufacture of cosmetics but it actually is. According to research that was carried out, waste cooking oil contains a certain type of surfactant which helps to regenerate damaged skin cells. In the name of recycling and preserving the environment, many cosmetic companies will obtain such waste oil from fast food restaurants and put it to good use in helping you look good.

Next in line we have Ambergris. I know – it sounds like something tasty and delicious but is everything but that. Ambergris is actually a black substance that is found in the digestive tracts of sperm whales. Just in case you thought nothing good could come from the inside of a whale then think again. This by product from the whale is actually accompanied by a very earthy and sweet smell. As a result Ambergris is commonly used in the manufacture of cosmetic fragrances. Relax! Just before you decide to stop wearing fragrances for good I have to point out that whale rights activists have actually managed to prevent the hunting of whales to acquire Ambergris. Also, most companies prefer manufacturing synthetic scents since they are much more popular and easier to acquire than Ambergris.

Finally, the substance that takes the throne for being the most astonishing product to be used in cosmetics is the human placenta. Just in case you didn’t know, an entire line of cosmetics has actually been developed from the human placenta. Apparently, hormones extracted from the placenta help to promote the growth of tissue and are very effective in the removal of wrinkles. Who would have thought the placenta could contain something that cosmetic companies would actually exploit.

These are just but a few examples of how the cosmetic industry has grown and changed in the past century alone. If you’re not comfortable using cosmetics derived from the products mentioned above then feel free to check out.
