At The Top Of His Game: Jon Stewart

This zany and capricious comedian has soared to the pinnacle of comedic success in the almost ten years since becoming the anchor of Comedy Central's The Daily Show, harvesting a witty and satirical style that the American public has come to cherish (on both sides of the political aisle!). Stewart's impressive ascension within the ranks of stand-up comics is a testament to the evolution and maturation of the tastes of comedy-consumers across the nation, proving that a vast swath of the public is capable of appreciating the humor of someone who, beyond making fun of himself in his ever-so-self-deprecating style, has shown no mercy for clumsy politicians and celebrities no matter how popular they may be!

From his upbringing in a Jewish household in New Jersey to his graduation from the College of William and Mary, Virginia, it must have been pretty obvious for friends and family that Stewart was drifting toward a career in comedy, and not sports; despite playing some soccer in college and being a baseball fan, his petite stature surely must have prevented him from rising to the major leagues. Though it would have arguably been just as funny for his viewers to see him get smothered by professional athletes on an HD TV set, Stewart seems to have found the adequate career path to evoke laughter and distinguish himself all at the same time.

One of the most telltale signs of success in the entertainment industry is the level of sway which you can exercise on those around you: Jon Stewart most definitely has sway. Beyond launching several of his Daily Show correspondents to stardom, like Steven Colbert and Steve Carell, both of whom now are the stars on their own shows, Stewart's sway has worked in the opposite direction for others. What Jon Stewart giveth, Jon Stewart also taketh away...and so it was for poor Tucker Carlson, who, after hosting Stewart in 2004 on what was surely the most disastrous episode of the now-defunct political “talk show” Crossfire, finished out the year only to learn from his boss that the show was being pulled, more than ostensibly because of the sentiments expressed by Stewart regarding the shows benefit to the public discourse.

Yet Stewart's own career hasn't been all plaudits—beside his Emmy-winning performance behind the anchor's desk at Daily Show headquarters, Jon has had several major flops in what have generally been B-rate flicks, leading the actor himself to poke fun at his failure to sow the other side of TV success: the Big Screen. Nonetheless, in lieu of critical acclaim Stewart has achieved something verging on cult-like appraise, just another demonstration of how this incorrigible comedian can snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

To sum up, this bright and incisive jokester seems to be very much at the top of his game still, and there are virtually no indications that he's running out of sassy one-liners to double us over with laughter (nor can we honestly imagine that the world will stop giving Jon sordid and ridiculous material with which to flaunt his wit). Fortunately, due to his tremendous success, The Daily Show can be viewed just about anywhere and in any format, whether it be satellite TV, cable, via the Internet, in high definition or however you please!
