Atlanta Botanical Garden Celebrates A Grand Opening
Canopy Walk is an elevated walkway through Storza Woods, one of Atlanta’s last urban hardwood forests. Visitors will observe mature maples, oaks, hickories, and poplars from 40 feet in the air. The structural support system of the Canopy Walk creates a suspension bridge through a woodland area not previously accessible to visitors. This unique tree level Canopy Walk is the only one of its kind in the U.S. From the Canopy Walk, visitors go through a tunnel into the Cascades Garden. This area contains a lovely three level water feature. Waterfalls cascade into pools that are surrounded by lush plantings. Nearby benches located under pergolas provide an inviting place for visitors to enjoy the sounds of the rushing water. The Edible Garden is another new area of the garden. Occupying space that was formerly an asphalt parking lot, this area showcases various fruits and vegetables that can be used in the landscape, as well as the Herb Wall, a vertical herb garden. Each weekend through October, local area chefs will present cooking demonstrations in the new Outdoor Kitchen. Upcoming demonstrations include Salsa Day, Melon Fest, and Grilled Garden Pizzas. The Outdoor Kitchen will also be the venue for the new seasonal wine pairings classes. The Atlanta Botanical Garden is one of Atlanta’s premier attractions. It is located at 1345 Piedmont Avenue NE in midtown, adjacent to Piedmont Park. The 30 acre garden contains formal gardens, a rose garden, Storza Woods, the Fuqua Conservatory, and the Orchid Center, as well as the three popular new additions. The garden was recently awarded LEED certification for the green design of its parking facility and Hardin Visitor Center. Regular summer hours for the garden are Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00AM to 7:00PM. On Thursday evenings the gardens remain open until 10:00PM for Cocktails in the Garden. This is a pleasant time for visitors to enjoy the gardens against the backdrop of the city lights of Atlanta.
