Atlanta Symphony 2012 Winter Highlights
On January 19-22 the Atlanta Symphony will present Beethoven’s monumental “Eroica” Symphony No. 3. Principal Guest Conductor Donald Runnicles will conduct. This is Runnicles’ 11th year of artistic partnership with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Britten’s Violin Concerto, Opus 15, showcasing the talents of Canadian violinist James Ehnes, is also on the program. Ehnes has performed in major cities around the world including London, Paris, Tokyo, New York, Boston, and Chicago. Ticket prices range from $21-$79. A Ravel and Beethoven program will be presented on February 2-4. The program includes Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3, and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8. Thomas Wilkins, Music Director of the Omaha Symphony, will be the guest conductor. Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero will be making her Atlanta Symphony debut. Her improvisational gifts have made her a popular performer around the world. The Enchantment Theatre Company will present two matinee performance of The Fabled Cinderella on February 12. Family audiences will delight in the life sized puppets, costumes, magic, and music of this original production. Jere Flint, Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra Music Director, will be conducting. Ticket prices range from $15-$20. Concerts on March 1-4 will feature a world premier by American composer Adam Schoenberg. He has been commissioned to write three new works for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The program will include Grieg’s Piano Concerto, featuring pianist Andre Watts. The evening will conclude with Nielsen’s Symphony No. 5. On March 22-24 audiences will be treated to a program of Mozart and Beethoven. Greek-born violinist Leonidas Kavakos will be performing as well as making his Atlanta conducting debut. Kavakos regularly appears with major orchestras in Europe and North America. The program will include Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 3 and Symphony No. 34, and Beethoven’s Symphony No.4. Ticket prices range from $21-$79. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra performs at the Woodruff Arts Center, located at 1280 Peachtree Street NE in midtown Atlanta. Parking is conveniently located in the Woodruff Arts Center garage at Colony Square or in other nearby parking garages. Public transportation is available on MARTA.
