This turned out as the state of Victoria issued a bill seeking to make free bets offered as promo items illegal. The move is said to be an attempt to curb rampant problem gambling that is a constant headache to Australian authorities.
According to Victoria chief executive Rob Hines, free bets often tempt players into gambling more which leads to addiction. He added, “It’s a responsible gambling issue. We have always held the view that gamers must be cautious in their betting.”
Both Betfair and Luxbet have already taken down their free bet offers even before the bill was passed.
According to Betfair CEO, their move was voluntary and that it is their response to the action. “We don’t believe that free bets cause problem gambling. But we can see governments banning them everywhere,” he said.
Many other casinos have already followed suit and have started canceling their free bet offers in response to this. Most casinos often offer free play with wins from $50 to $800 in the offing, as a means to get customers to play in.
If the bill passes, Victoria will be the third state in the country to passed such a measure. Both New South Wales and South Australia have already passed such laws last year. The laws were a response to last year’s relaxation of marketing and advertising laws, which bookies and casino operators took advantage of, resulting in much marketing activity.
