Avant Mixtapes-the Early Years
Avant was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio and showed an interest in music from a very young age. He started honing his skills as a child, singing in church and various venues in the Cleveland area. He got much more serious about his craft as a teenager when he enrolled in The Cleveland School Of Arts and started writing music for future albums. One of the rap mixtapes that Avant released included the single Separated, which got some air play on a Chicago radio station. It caught the ear of Basketball legend Magic Johnson, giving Avant the break for which he had dreamed. Before long, he became the first act signed to the basketball player’s label, Magic Johnson Music. Avant released his debut album, entitled My Thoughts, and watched it rise to the number one spot on the Billboard Hip Hop and R&B charts. The album included the song Separated, as well as another hit single called My First Love. The album eventually went platinum and set the tone for the rest of Avant’s career. Avant mixtapes helped the singer/songwriter get his start and even featured songs that would become hits once his career got off the ground. In fact, he may never have caught the attention of Magic Johnson if he had not circulated those tapes to industry insiders. They led to just one of many successful albums that the singer would release over the next few years.
