Avoid Student Debt Like The Plague

Most college or university students will deal with debt at some point during their education. Nevertheless, this doesnt mean that we should be okay with racking up debt. Here are some tips on avoiding student loans, paying off student loans if you do have obtained them, and great cash saving habits.

Alternatives to Student Loans:

Obtaining a scholarship or grant is the best alternative to getting a student loan because you don't have to pay them back. Scholarships can be found most places and they are given out for various reasons from essay writing to being on the National Honor Roll. You can find scholarships at the college you wish to attend (or are attending), at local businesses and organizations, and on the internet.

A few of the local businesses and organizations that award scholarships are the Lions Club, Optimist, Girls & Boys Club, and Retail Stores. Web sites that will find scholarships for you are Scholarships.com and FastWeb.com. You can apply for a grant at fafsa.ed.gov.

A different way to avoid student loans is to use your skills to get a high paying full time job during the summer and a part-time job during the school year. Look at your abilities, talents, and skills to find a job that's perfect for someone like you.

Paying Off Student Loans:

If you follow this simple advice you will be able to pay off your student loans quickly and painlessly. It can be hard at first, but soon you will get into the habit. Here are the tips:

-Lock in a Low Rate: Take the time to search for a low interest rate loan and then make sure the rate is locked in.

-Pay Through School: Many student loans don't obligate you to pay through school, however, you should do it anyway. Even a small monthly payment will save you a lot of money.

-Never Miss a Payment: Bad habits are easy to form and hard to break. Don't get into the habit of missing payments.

-Make Large Payments: If you pay more than the required amount you'll have that loan paid off much faster.

Money Saving Habits

Generally debt difficulties are caused by the complacent way we spend our money. Several individuals scrape by no matter how much or how little money they're making. This is because of their poor spending habits.

Forming new habits is the most effective way of breaking old ones. Try using coupons, shopping at discount stores, eating out less frequently, and attending matinees rather than evening movies. Some movie theatres give discount tickets people with student ID's. If it's possible, share an apartment with many people. These are generally much cheaper. Think about living without a car and ride a bike or walk instead. This'll save you a lot of gas money. Whenever you go shopping always ask yourself "Do I truly need it?" before you put any item into your cart and never shop for groceries when you are hungry.

Do not cheat your future by racking up a bunch of debt in your college years. Listen to the recommendations given in this article and you will finish college with small debts or even debt free! You'll be thankful you did!
