Bp Oil Spill And Terrorism

With the BP oil spill, many questions about offshore drilling have been brought to light. However, there is one question that hasn’t made as big a splash, but is something we should all be thinking about:

What if terrorists caused the BP oil spill catastrophe?

I would imagine this question hasn’t been on people’s mind because we all assume BP just made big mistakes that led to a big problem. And that may be true. But even though we may not think the spill was caused by terrorists, we should still be wondering whether or not terrorists could cause massive damage to our economy and environment if they just replicated the BP spill.

John Pilmer, a new novelist, brings this idea up in his new book, ‘Green Spin’. The book is set in the future, where green technology has taken off and expanded because of situations like the BP spill. John brings up the idea that after a number of years, the BP spill investigation finds evidence a mile under water that points to terrorist activity as the cause of the spill.

Granted, ‘Green Spin’ is fiction. But the idea he brings up may not be fiction for long. We have seen what has happened to our people and our environment because of this spill. Think of the implications of a collaborative terrorist strike on say, five oilrigs at once. Or even ten. We have seen what can happen when one is compromised. We wouldn’t have the resources to clean up five simultaneous attacks.

Since 9/11, we have been focused on keeping ourselves safe from bombs and hijacked airplanes. With the recent focus on immigration we are more aware of terrorists sneaking into our country. As we watch movies, we are afraid of bio weapons and cyber terrorism. And I think it is important that we continue to keep a focus on each of these dangers. But the BP disaster has opened our eyes to a new level of terrorism: going after our environment and threatening our natural resources.

I have never heard anyone say they are worried about terrorists attacking oil fields in Texas, or potato farms in Idaho. And I have never heard of terrorists attacking oil rigs in the Gulf. But if a man can bring it up in a fictitious novel, and show us what damage can be caused, maybe it is time to be worried. Not worried in a lock-yourself-in-your-house way. But worried in a way that gets us to make this danger known. Bring it up. Discuss it. You and I may not have enough power alone to get people to listen. But as we discuss the danger, hopefully people with the power to implement change will hear. We don’t want to lose our natural resources or environment to terrorists. We want to have such things safe, and be able to use both our environment and natural resources to better our lives and the lives of generations to come. Let us continue to work toward cleaner, safer energy. And lets keep what energy we have right now safe too.

Terrorists may not have been what caused the BP oil spill. But we have seen what such an event can do. Great damage. Which is the primary desire of terrorists who seek to bring down this country. But we will not let that happen. Let us continue to move toward greener energy, and let us protect and appreciate what energy and resources we have now.
