Baby-how To Avoid Nappy Rash

Nappy rash is a common problem babies have. It is the inflammation of the skin in the nappy area, otherwise know as the diaper area. The surrounding area and genitals can also get a nappy rash. When this happens, pink or red blotches may appear on the affected area.

Prolonged wetness is a common reason a baby develops nappy rash. Stale urine and feces that is not properly cleaned in the nappy area can further irritate the rash. Most cases of nappy rash are mild, and can be easily treated. The pain and discomfort that a baby experiences when they have a nappy rash makes this a problem that needs immediate attention.

There are precautions that can be taken to avoid nappy rash. Changing a nappy frequently is one of the most important things that you can do for your baby. Once the nappy is removed, proper cleaning and drying is crucial before putting on a clean nappy.

Once the nappy is removed, gently clean the area with warm water and a cotton cloth. Leave the baby's bottom bare as long as possible before putting on a fresh nappy. If possible, try to leave off the nappy approximately one hour a few times a day. Right before the nappy is put on, evenly spread some barrier cream on the nappy area. A pharmacist can advise you about the best cream to use on a baby's nappy area.

The type of nappy you use is a personal preference. Cotton nappies are usually worn with plastic pants that have elastic leg openings. This type can leave the nappy area exposed to moisture for a prolonged period, which may cause a nappy rash.

The leg opening can also cause discomfort. If you use cotton nappies, wash them in mild detergent, then double rinse them. Disposable diapers are made to absorb moisture away from the baby's body. Both nappy choices are effective. The key is a proper fitting nappy that is frequently changed.

Experimenting with both types of nappies is another choice. This will hep you decide which nappy works best for your situation and baby.
