‘back Up’ Keys

Keeping back up keys that you get copied by a locksmith is a very useful way to ensure that you don’t get locked out. A back up key is a key you get copied by your locksmith and keep as your spare set – you should have one for each of the ‘crucial’ doors in your home you need to be able to get in. An obvious option for what to do with this spare set is to store them outside your house – in a bush or under a welcome mat. This will also be handy when you want to let guests visit your home when you are not yourself in, perhaps to water the plants while you are on holiday or to feed a cat. Of course the downside to this is that it can present something of a security risk if the keys should be discovered by those other than the people you’ve permitted to enter your home. If you do take this route then, you should be sure to keep them somewhere well hidden where they can’t be found (and the idea of placing them under door mats or in plant pots as mentioned earlier is largely too predictable). Instead then try something like lightly burying the keys in a nearby bush, or locking them in the shed and burying the shed key elsewhere. Think outside the box a little and you will be able to prevent any one from finding them.

A better bet is to leave your set of keys with a local friend or neighbour. This way they can hold onto the set for you and then present you with them when you find yourself needing them. If you rent your property then you should already know one person who has a spare set – that being your landlord who will have had the locksmith make multiple copies for just such events. However you won’t always be able to call them without incurring a fee so it is better to know someone and make arrangements yourself for this eventuality.

Giving keys to those very local is a good idea as it means you’ll be able to go and get them easily without driving (you may not be able to drive if your car keys are also lost). If you know someone local who is retired then this is even better as they will be more likely to be at home when you need your keys. Likewise you should give keys to your family – those being your parents, siblings, children and partners as they will normally be willing to come out and help you without your ‘owing them one’ or feeling too guilty. Of course getting so many keys copied by a locksmith may not be overly cheap, but if you end up using them all then you would only have had them copied anyway, and if might well save you a lot of time and effort later on meaning that in reality it is actually an investment!
