Background Checks Reveals The Truth Against Weasel Words
Patrick Lewis, shared his experience at the Letter to the Editor (Pocono Record). He applied for a job and passed the interview at the new Distribution Center. The company afterwards conducted a background check and found out a misdemeanor theft charge from two years ago, which was over the case of some coins. He was accused of stealing and couldn’t prove that he didn’t do it. That was the end of his dream to get the job.
Let’s explore more about the issue. Perhaps misleading facts occurred with it.
Lewis is pointing out things on the light side such as stating that the “misdemeanor theft that charge from two years ago, which was over some coins”. This is an example of weasel words.
Weasel words are misleading languages that are used to deceive, confuse or manipulate others. According to the criminal justice system, theft offenses are considered “crimes of dishonesty or untruthfulness”. Therefore, a theft conviction will most likely limit your choice to do or land on a job you want.
What seems to be wrong on the article above?
He seemed to think that everything will be alright because it was a matter of just some coins two years ago. No. The reason of the company is that’s why they conduct a background check to know the negative sides of the person. This is to check whether if the person is a threat or an asset. To employ someone is to let that person know every aspect of the company. The person can then have access of the many things around the company. Since he has stolen before, the company is afraid that he might do it again with them.
This is the purpose of a company’s background check. When applying for a job, you will doubtless market yourself using the best possible ways. But now, companies seek information through a background check. Flowery words are a big “no, no” to them. It counts how you conduct yourself and everything is recorded so you can’t hide because you are under background check.
