Bad Cholesterol Sources – What Are Some Of The Worst?

Knowing what some of the worst bad cholesterol sources are is a necessity in effectively managing and maintaining heart healthy cholesterol levels. Most people have some knowledge of bad cholesterol sources, but not necessarily enough to achieve their cholesterol management goals.

Recently one of my good friends has his annual physical, only to find his LDL (bad cholesterol) to HDL (good cholesterol) ratio was way out of whack. Good would be considered 2 to 1 with 3 to 1 being about average, his was a staging 6 to 1. His doctor was animate about him making some changes in his diet, and he agreed. When he told me this the first thing I asked him is what do you eat for lunch, because I knew he was always on the go. After a slight pause, he responded by admitting that he probably eats too much fast food, but because of his cholesterol problem his wife has started packing him two sandwiches and some fruit. What’s on the sandwich, I asked? His response was bologna, mayonnaise, and cheese.

As you can see it is no wonder why his cholesterol is out of balance. One slice of either beef or turkey bologna contains 3 grams of saturated fat and mayonnaise (18%) and cheese (27%) are very high in saturated fat as well. Most, but not all, meats are high in cholesterol raising saturated fats. Salami (2.28 grams) and franks (5.42 grams). On the other there are a few heart healthy choices as well including sliced turkey breast (0.1grams) and extra lean sliced ham (0.46 grams or 5 percent). Substituting mustard for mayonnaise and considering a whole grain bread offering such as flax are also good cholesterol lowering suggestions.

Red meats are considered to be some of the worst bad cholesterol sources when consumed in large quantities, thus prompting many cardiologists to suggest a diet that consist of small portions of red meat, making up the difference with vegetables such as kale, broccoli, and brussels sprouts. Additionally, the American Heart Association suggests two serving of baked fish weekly as a substitute for other meat choices.

While most meats are considered to be bad cholesterol sources they are not the only culprits. Among the other biggest offenders are poultry skin, unfiltered coffee, organ meat such as liver, some canned chili, egg yolks, margarines high in trans fat, high fat dairy such as stick butter, coconut, and coconut oil. There are other bad cholesterol sources but generally speaking these are the worst of the worst.

What else? Lowering cholesterol, in most cases, is about changing old habits, adopting new healthier habits, and enlisting the help of convention medications such as statins or natural cholesterol reducing remedies if needed. Put simply, this basically means finding ways to increase HDL (good cholesterol) and decrease LDL (bad cholesterol levels). Certainly the aforementioned statin drugs will be one of your options but they do carry a number of serious label warnings. The side effect risks have made natural cholesterol reduction supplements combined with diet modification a safe and effective combination worth considering.
