Bankruptcy And Denial

What do financial problems and substance abuse have in common?

The title of this article should give you a clue.

You see, much like an alcohol or drug abuse problem, financial problems are something that most people are in denial about. They don't have a problem, everything is going just fine. They can't hope to ever pay off their debts; they're barely making their minimum monthly payments.

But everything is just fine, the economy will turn around soon and they'll be back to work or maybe they'll win the lottery.

REALLY?

Like other problems, you need to confront the reality that you have a problem before you can begin to fix it.

In most people's defense, they're getting the wrong message from a source they think is knowledgeable; our government. Whether on a Federal, State or local level, governments continue to spend more money than they have, digging themselves deeper and deeper into a hole.

And, like a child who watched their parents get drunk and then argue; maybe even come to blows, many Americans have spent their way into a hole that they have no hope of climbing out of. Except you can't print money or force people to give you money under threat of duress (taxes).

Think about this analogy for a moment.

Does anyone with an alcohol problem ever really think they're going to improve their situation if they just drink a lot more? Or are they just doing what they've always done, because they're just not thinking about it, or they simply can't confront it?

Either way, simply wishing a problem away won't work, you have to take action.

It doesn't really matter if you've charged up huge credit card debt buying big screen TVs and then lost your job or if you or a loved one suffered some kind of medical emergency and you're faced with overwhelming medical bills.

How you got here isn't nearly as important as what you do now.

The first step to any recovery is admitting you have a problem that you need help with.

And when you finally confront the situation, you may find that it's not as big as your worries made it out to be.
