Barristers And Their Bookcases

When you visit a barrister's innings or any law firm, one of the things that will strike you is the decor. It is distinctively "legal" in its conception. We never get to see the judge's private office but one can make a reasonable assumption that it will resemble what we see when we visit an attorney.

The bookcases create an ambiance of learning and gravity. Perhaps it is done for effect in order to make the client stand back in awe. The iconic lawyer's bookcase has a background with a glass enclosure. The professional standards of lawyers mean that they have to keep up appearances at all times.

With the glass doors, it is possible to reduce the cleaning bills. Of course that lock is essential in order to ensure client confidentiality. If you share an office with other barristers then you might have individual locks. It is easier that way. That does not mean that you are working with a bunch of criminals. However it gives you confidence that your secrets will remain that way. Barristers are still human when all is said and done.

Iconography and the lawyer's bookcase
Somehow it is problematic to imagine an experienced barrister with contemporary cane furniture. We associate this profession with solid oak. Dark is the preferred hue under most circumstances. Like the doctor is expected to be in white, we also make certain stereotypical assumptions about the stylistic choices of our legal representatives.

It is sometimes amazing to note that lawyers are generally associated with tradition and yet they make landmark rulings that have changed the world. If you want to make a statement then you can go for white in your office. Glass tends to be clean but it might showcase all your secrets.

It is not surprising that there is a niche for furniture stores who sell items to the legal profession. This is an advanced market segment that might need coaxing before it gets to the stage where it fully understands the operations of the modern world. However that does not mean that lawyers are not interested in beautiful things.

Use the internet to look for the niche providers. They will give you a run for your money in terms of the variety that they bring to the table. Make sure that you visit the price comparison websites because they will ensure that you can stick to the office budget. You should not leave the task to your office manager. Your work place will end up lacking personality.

Can you go for antique bookcases?
It all depends on the amount of work that you are prepared to put in and the depth of your pocket. Unlike contemporary furniture, antiques require significant research. You need to ensure that you get a genuine article. Of course you need to think about restoration and maintenance.

It is convenient to simply go for modern bookcases but they might not make the dramatic statement that you are looking for. The traditions of the legal profession should not be allowed to hold back your stylistic preferences.
