I'm here to give some basic speech skills that should help you work your way through a speech in a competent manner. Speeches can be the most stomach turning thing a person can do and that's because we don't know what to do. It's not like our parents teach us this skill. When you know what to do, it gets easier.
Be Funny: Humor is a great tool for keeping the audience paying attention and it also keeps everyone happy. When people are cracking up with every joke you add in, you know you're doing a good job. Humor is just an excellent tool that you should always try to take advantage of, but not everyone is humorous. I actually didn't find out I was funny until I did an impromptu speech at Toastmasters. You'll probably discover a little humorous person inside of you, so don't worry. If you're not good at it, practice. If you're still not getting laughs, than don't bother doing it. It's not a good feeling when you make a joke and no one laughs.
Get to the point: This is a skill you need to develop as quickly as possible. Some of us naturally ramble or ramble when we're in a nervous situation like public speaking. There are many ways of getting your point across and the less amount of words you use the better because you have less of a chance of your audience actually falling asleep. Make sure you have a point to the speech, that every direction you go you let the audience know how this relates to the point, then at the end sum everything up and reiterate the point.
