Be The Best Man You Can Be: Fulfilling Your Responsibilities To The Bride And Groom

One of the biggest honors one man can extend to another is to ask him to be his Best Man in his wedding. Being the Best Man often comes with several responsibilities. Make sure you don’t leave the happy couple hanging with these tips.

Check Lists: As the best man, a check list is your absolute best friend. As soon as you accept the honor of being your buddy’s best man, pull out a pen and paper and start making a list of things to do. In the early stages of wedding planning you’ll have to start helping the groom choose tuxes as well as making sure the groomsmen get together for fittings. As the wedding day gets closer you’re responsibilities will include involvement in the bachelor or stag party, the rehearsal party, the wedding and finally the reception. Having a list of things you’ll need to do, places you’ll need to be, and people you need to see/speak to, will help keep you organized.

Bachelor Party: While some responsibilities designated to the best man are less than exciting, the bachelor party is not one of them. You’re the head honcho when it comes to planning the grooms last night out as a single man. A few months before the wedding, talk to the groom and get an idea of what he wants his bachelor party to be like. Once you have a good idea what the groom wants, start talking to the rest of the groomsmen and get planning. Early planning will allow for plenty of time to make arrangements, find out who is definitely going to be joining you that night, and figure out how much money it’s going to cost and how it will be divided between the groomsmen.

That Morning: The groom has a million things going on in his mind the morning of his wedding. As the best man, it’s your responsibility to do the important thinking for him. There are certain things that you will need to remember to bring on the wedding day. This includes the wedding license as well as the couple’s rings. Before you leave your house or hotel room the morning of the wedding take a look at your checklist and make sure you have everything you and the groom will need for the day to go smoothly.

At the Ceremony: On the wedding day, take a long look at yourself in the mirror or grab the mother of the groom and make sure you have your tux on right. After you’ve established your dressed your best, make sure the groom looks impeccable. After that you’ll need to inspect the groomsmen to make sure they look just as good as you do walking guests to their seats and the bridesmaids to the altar.

Travel Plans: Before the day of the wedding finalize the new couple’s honey moon traveling arrangements. Once again, this day is all about them, so that means they shouldn’t have to worry about anything. Be the best man and make sure they have a ride to the air port, and that they have their tickets, money and luggage.

Reception Duties: Everyone, including the bride and the groom, wants to have fun at the wedding reception. To many guests, the reception is time to cut loose and take advantage of the open bar. If you’re no stranger to fun and love to drink a few at weddings, you’ll need to watch your alcohol intake on the day you are filling the best man’s shoes. Your job is to help the newly married couple make it through their big day that means that you should be coherent and capable until they leave for their honeymoon. You also are responsible for making a speech. Don’t make a fool out of yourself and the couple by slurring all the way through it. Sure have a few drinks and have a great time, but save the blackout for a wedding you don’t have an important role in.
