Beaches And Other Ways To Keep Cool On Italy’s Hot Amalfi Coast

Most of the beaches on this rocky coast are pebbled, not sandy. Where proper beaches do exist, much of their area is occupied by “stabilimenti” or beach clubs, and the price for 2 lounge chairs and an umbrella costs an average of 25 Euros for the day. Inevitably, a portion of each beach is designated as “spiaggia libera” or public beach. Here one can go with their beach blankets and umbrellas and enjoy the beach without paying. The beaches at Maiori, Minori, and Amalfi are some of the best equipped beaches on the coast, with a seaside main road complete with shops, bars and restaurants.

A unique beach loved by tourists and locals alike is that of the Fiordo di Furore (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Fiordo_di_Furore.JPG) . This is a rocky beach located beneath a gorge that cuts underneath the mountain range. A bridge runs across the top of the gorge, and each year there is an international diving competition where divers from all over the world unite to strut their stuff on a 28 meter drop.

To get to the Fiord you can hike down to it from the town (about 1 hour, mostly steps) or drive down and park along the bridge, then follow the stone steps into the gorge.

Many of the larger hotels along the coast are equipped with swimming pools that overlook the scenic coastline. If yours does not and you have had enough of the pebbly beaches, many hotels allow outsiders to enjoy their pool for a day fee. One such hotel is the Furore Inn Resort. For 30 Euros per day, you can relax on a lounge chair by one of their three pools.
