Beads - An Endless Creation

Not too many people are aware that small objects such as beads can have a wide range of use - both functional and decorative. These objects come in different sizes and are made from different materials; but most, if not all, of them are spherical in shape. The word bead is of Middle English origin which comes from the word bede or "prayer".

The early beadworks were of ethnic significance such as those worn by tribes of West Africa, Mauritania, and Nigeria and even in Asian countries such as the Philippines. In addition, among the primary usages of these objects were personal adornment. In fact, archeological records showed their primitive existence. Another common purpose for beadwork is for religious purposes. In fact, the word bede originally referred to the rosaries or the prayer beads which are still used up to present time for making rosaries. In addition, these beads made up most of the charms as well as amulets used in traditional societies.

Beads are made from ceramic, gemstones, glass, metal, pearl, plastic, wood, and many other materials. The process of creating art out of beads is called "beadwork". This craft involves the process of attaching single beads together or attaching these to clothing. Among the common techniques used to come up with a beaded craft is bead embroidery, loom, knitting and crocheting.

Many beads products that are now available on the market are jewelry, purses, bracelets, necklaces, and many others items. All of these items share some familiarity with the beads from earlier centuries.
