Bedroom Furniture, The Complete Guide To Bedroom Style

Considering how much time we spend in them, people give surprisingly little thought to their bedroom style. Now granted, much of the time we spend in our bedrooms is time spent asleep and therefore not really in much of a position to appreciate stylish décor, but that’s no reason to not give it some thought.

That said, you do need to strike a balance between style and functionality. It’s wonderful to have an awesome super king size bed made of polished oak that’s simply breathtaking, but it’s not especially useful if you can’t actually sleep on the thing. So while it’s good to have style, it’s better to have style that’s nice and comfy.

When deciding on a bedroom style, there’s a matrix of things you need consider. What your style ends up looking like is going to depend on how much money you have, the size of your home and how you use your bedroom. But by balancing all these elements successfully, you’ll be able to create a bedroom that reflects your personal style that you can actually sleep in.

The one thing that probably overrides all other concerns is the size of your bedroom. If you have a bedroom that is only slightly bigger than your bed itself, then your options are going to be different than someone who has a bedroom that could host be called upon to host an orchestra if necessary.

You need to figure out how much bed you’re going to get. This is by far the most important part of the room, so consider carefully. The less bed you have, the more room you’re going to have for things like chests of drawers and bedside cabinets. At the same time, you need enough bed to be comfortable.

So, what you need to do is measure your potential bedroom and then go look at beds. Get the bed that fits that you feel most comfortable in. Remember, you spend a good third of your life in the thing, so it’s worth getting one that’s right.

The next consideration is price. You might love a classic style and want to furnish your bedroom entirely in antique furniture, but if you’re barely making the mortgage, you might want to consider a style that is a little more economically functional.

Now, having said that, you should buy the best bedroom furniture that you can afford. This stuff needs to last, and you generally get what you pay for. If you buy Ikea crap and have to replace it every two years, you’re going to end up spending a lot more in the long run than if you purchased well to begin with. Like getting the right size of stuff, getting the right quality should probably take precedence over aesthetic concerns.

Once you’ve got an idea about the space available and the price you can afford, then you can start thinking about the style you want. A big part of the style you choose in the items that you choose to put in your bedroom. If all you have in your room is a bed and white walls, then you’re making an entirely different style statement than if you had dressers, an armoire, a bed stand and whatever else you can think of.

Style isn’t just a matter of what your stuff looks like; it’s a matter of what stuff you choose. A good way to think about it is to consider what your bedroom looks like and what you want it to look like. If you can, take pictures of your bedroom without any furniture in it and take them with you when you’re looking at furniture.

You should also be looking at the furniture you choose as pieces of a whole. Your stuff doesn’t exist in a vacuum, and something that looks terrific in a catalog may not work with the stuff you actually have in your bedroom. Once again, pictures can be very helpful.

Ultimately, style is personal and no one can tell you what is right for you but you. But if you take the time to think about what you want your bedroom to look like and go into shopping with a plan, you’re going to have a much better time than if you just shop and hope for the best.
