Beginners Guide To Loft Insulation
A common misconception with loft insulation is that it is one of those horrible jobs that will take ages to finish. Maybe even need to get a 'man' in to do the job properly. Well this is simply not the case as in most cases you could be looking completing the job in 1-3 hours. It can be a little messy but not technically difficult to do. The nature of insulation product is that all you are doing is trimming either the insulation board / insulation roll to fit between your rafters. It really is not that difficult, so if you are fit and able to get in your loft space then you should be able to this DIY job. First of all, you will need to decide on the type of insulation to opt for. There are two main type solid boards or the roll. Both have their advantages, the roll type is more common but the board can provide a higher insulation grade. It is best to check out your local supplier to find out what is on offer. What could you save? These estimated figures are taken from the Energy Savings Trust and are based on adding between 50 – 270 mm of insulation. So you can recover the cost of the insulation in just a over a year! Annual Saving = £40 Installation cost = £50-£350 CO2 saving per year = 210kg Checklist You have decided to go for it and install the insulation, what do you need to do to check befre starting the job? 1. Easy access to your loft space – big enough to ft you and the insulation material through. If your loft hatch is not big enough then unfortunately you are going to have to admit defeat and get a professional in. They can fit a loft hatch correctly for you ensuring supporting beams are not cut through. 2. Is the loft space clear? Many of us use a loft as a dumping ground. The vast majority of this has probably been in the loft for years and is not needed anymore. Hire a skip and empty the loft, be ruthless as if you don’t you will end up with a garage full of stuff. 3. Have a look around firstly and make sure you don’t have any surprise visitors up there. Check for things like wasp nests. If you see something like a wasp nest then don’t try and deal with it on your own. Call your local council to help you remove it. 4. Is there a light in the loft? A simple solution is to run an extension cable up into the loft, just be careful to tie the cable back so you don’t have a ‘casualty’ moment and tripping on the cable. If all is ok then find a supplier, try and choose one with delivery as otherwise you may be making a few return visits to the store. Loft insulation is bulky so it is always best to get a man with a van to delivery it for you.
